This program aims to erect signs of commemoration at the locations of former rural schools in and around the Carstairs District. This project was started by the Carstairs Heritage Centre and has, to date, six signs in place for Sunnyslope, Boston, York, Green Acres, Hawkeye, and Banner II schools. The complete list of schools in the area is listed in Our Prairie Trails Vol. I, and also appears in the school display in the North Gallery within the Museum. The signs are brass plaques on a pole, designed to resemble a schoolhouse. The name of the school, as well as its school district number and land location, are part of the design of the sign. Along the bottom of each plaque is a QR code which can be scanned for additional information on the school.
The project is organized and run by the Carstairs Heritage Centre and our goal is to mark the location of ALL former rural schools. If you are interested in purchasing a sign for a schoolhouse, please Contact us. You can also donate funds towards the project. Other schools in the area have previously been marked by school signs – Bancroft, Bergthal and Neapolis. These signs were installed by interested parties before this project began.
